Nestled in the heart of Tokyo’s bustling Akasaka district, Okumanya is a delightful café that has reimagined the traditional Japanese snack experience. Specializing in taiyaki—those iconic fish-shaped waffle cakes filled with sweet fillings—this quaint spot stands out for its authentic approach and a truly welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re a local or a traveler discovering the wonders of Japanese cuisine, Okumanya offers a unique culinary adventure that is not to be missed.

As you step inside, the ambiance is instantly inviting, filled with the tantalizing aromas of freshly cooked taiyaki. The café’s cozy layout encourages diners to savor their treats at leisure. You’ll find a selection of dishes that range from classic to innovative, appealing to both traditionalists and those looking to explore new flavors.

Among the must-try items is the Oldfashioned Taiyaki (JP¥280), masterfully crafted using homemade chunky red bean paste made from Hokkaido-grown azuki beans. Each bite is a delightful journey back in time, evoking the nostalgia of childhood with its soft, fluffy exterior and naturally sweet filling—free from salt, additives, or processed sugars. For a twist on the classic, the Taiyaki with Green Laver Seaweed dazzles the palate with its luxurious aroma, infusing the traditional taiyaki with a touch of sea essence, while the Taiyaki Set for Dining In (JP¥600-800) perfectly pairs your chosen taiyaki with a refreshing cup of rare Ise tea—a regal combination that elevates your experience.

For dessert lovers, the Mini Taiyaki Parfait (JP¥800) is a delightful option. Picture a charming clear cup filled with vanilla soft cream, topped with a mini taiyaki custard and your choice of one of four luscious sauces—strawberry, chocolate, matcha, or sugar cane—resulting in a harmonious blend of Japanese and Western sweets.

Okumanya is not just about exceptional food. The friendly staff enhances the experience, often being described in reviews as welcoming and cheerful, creating an atmosphere that feels like home. For instance, Christian Azucenas expressed how the thoughtful service turned his visit into one of the highlights of his trip, while Dina Astayeva emphasized the café's “very friendly atmosphere,” which complements the delicious offerings perfectly.

The combination of fantastic taiyaki, exquisite desserts, and warm hospitality makes Okumanya a must-visit café while in Tokyo. Whether you're looking for a relaxing afternoon snack or a sweet ending to your meal, this café delivers a taste of Japan that resonates with authenticity and charm.

Very nice taiyaki (fish-shaped waffle cake with stuffing of red bean paste, custard, or other fillings) with a variety of flavours to choose from. Every month there’s a special flavour for the month, giving it an extra bit of fun. The sundae set is also nice, with elements of traditional Japanese sweets like red beans, sticky rice balls, etc. Nice location and the eat-in area is spacious. English menu and English service are available. Great food and great experience.

Got excellent, delicious Matcha Taiyaki Parfait, but got even more outstanding service! The missus who helped me order was so welcoming and made my evening instantly better by being so cheerful - she even made great efforts to understand my broken Japanese Felt like I was talking to someone from home Eating here was one of my favorite experiences on this trip so far, I'm so happy to have visited Okumanya this evening Highly recommended!

Very cute shop with the most lovely owners and great food! I had the traditional taiyaki with the recommended cold Japanese tea and it was excellent! A great combo. My friend had the parfait taiyaki set with matcha ice cream and chocolate sauce, as well as a matcha latte, which was also really good! The menu has an English side and the owners speak good English too so if you don’t speak Japanese it’s no problem!

We had taiyaki for dessert after dinner every night during our stay while in Akasaka and they did not disappoint! Their taiyaki is made fresh to order, with a wide selection of flavours to choose from. They also offer cold and hot drinks that you can have with your taiyaki when you dine in. We often ordered takeaway because we would visit late at night after a long day of exploring and eating, but if we had more time, I would certainly have dined in. You can watch them freshly make your taiyaki from a window out the front of the store, or sit indoors and enjoy their cosy, super clean dining area. Popular amongst tourists AND locals, I miss this store already now that I’m back in my home country. The owners, Eiji and Megumi are the best! They are so friendly and kind, speak English and strive for the best service. I’m thrilled to make friends with them and hope to see them again when we visit Akasaka again! 10/10 recommend! Tip: if you order taiyaki fresh on a cold day/night, eat it straight away. Like any hot batter food item, it will cool down quickly when it’s a super cold time of the day! Eiji and Megumi, if you see this, hello and thank you for your great hospitality! I’ll be dreaming about their taiyaki until my next visit to Tokyo.

Their taiyaki is made to perfection! Nice crispy exterior with lotsa red bean stuffing. Ordered their nori taste, it’s really good prefect mix of red bean with nori. Love it PS you know it’s a hit when locals come here for taiyaki too
